Maroon Town, nine piece ska and reggae band were invited by the British Council to perform five concerts in Kazakhstan and Kyrghystan. One of those concerts was in a prison for young people aged between 14 and 20 who had been deemed to have been involved in some crime or other. Kazakshtan is a country in huge transition and these are some of the victims of that change.

In June 2008 Maroon Town were invited by the British Embassy in Tajikistan to perform several concerts. Whilst there they were introduced to the Shahidi family who come from a long line of artists, poets, musicians, composers and intellectuals and who are dedicated to raising Tajikistan out of it's current isolation. In September 2000 Maroon Town at the invitation of the British Council performed several concerts in Kazakhstan. A local amateur theatre group from Almaty were inspired by one of their songs - 'Sunset in Calcutta' and created and performed this piece in an Almaty night club without announcement to the dancers on the dance floor. This is beautiful!
