We saw Diana Childers back yard about a month ago and there was much work needing to be done. Diana had a lot of ideas and after our visit, met with a garden designer friend, and began the process.
Our guest is Jodi Gurtov, Director of Horticulture. As we stroll through one part of the garden, I am amazed at how well the plants have established in less than seven years.
Allen Powers shows us how to make a mason bee block. Very easy to make and a good way to encourage these excellent pollinating insects into our garden.
We visit my friend Rich Baer and his 1,000 plus rose garden. This is the time of year to prune roses and Rich gave us some great tips. Above all he stresses, don't get stressed! Roses are forgiving and it is better to prune than not.
Our guest is Garden Designer Kip Nordstrom. Kip has an area shaded by very tall and mature fir trees and so has to garden with varying amounts of shade. She has created a wonderful woodland garden.
I talked about pruning a hardy fuchsia and how this is one plant not to prune too early because you do not know how far back the plant has died from winter cold.
We featured the new potted Red Leaf Banana (Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii'). I had one of these in my garden last year in a large pot (not large enough) and was thrilled with the growth and overall effect. It grew to probably 8 ft in height with huge tropical red leaves. It was in full sun and did just fine and became a major focal point for the garden.
The garden of Salem resident Ray Schreiner is beautiful at any time of the year but today the focus was on a small part of his Magnolia collection. Other than perhaps a public garden, I do not know of another collection this vast of Magnolias.
