These are some of the basic training exercises used in the Cateran Society Broadsword Academy for studying the art of the Regimental Highland Broadsword of the late 18th century.
At the Cateran Society Broadsword Academy in Portland, ME, we study the art of the Highland Broadsword. Footage is taken from Broadsword League Challenge Matches featuring Broadsword Academy fencers. If you like the music on this video, you can find the CD at http://www.saorsamed ia.com.
Open fencing using a mortuary sword and a heavy saber. In this bout, you will see two examples of an attack recorded in Highland folklore, but not in the broadsword manuals. This is the "swordsman's leap." See the story of Domhnull Og na h-Alba, as told to John Grant, quoted in Glenshee, 80-83. (Although we cannot leap anywhere near as high as the character in the story!)
Level 4 of our curriculum is derived from Gaelic folklore rather than the broadsword manuals. The great swordsman M'Comie Mor was said to be the master of a "graceful and sweeping" quick draw. We have attempted to reconstruct this lost technique.
