No kites, but a lovely fan dance effortlessly performed by Beijing Dance Academy. Many tempo changes and interesting formations, definitely NOT your average boring fan dance.
Mongolian Dance from the 4th Taoli Cup. Note the use of the skirt to show both galloping on the steppes and wind. At one point, the dancer seems to be looking out onto the vast plains. The dance should be about a minute longer but this version somehow cuts the beginning section out.
Modern portion from 3rd Taoli Cup National Dance Competition, Junior division. Ji Pingping went on to take the only senior division gold at the 2000 Paris Ballet Concours. She is currently a principle at Shanghai Ballet. The music is from the 2nd mvmt of 1 of Chopin's piano concertos (if I recall correctly).
The dance that made ??? a star. This dance took multiple top prizes at national competitions. It blends martial arts, folk and classical dance, virtuoso and acting, all in the context of a bottle-happy young man.
Modern dance portion from the 3rd Taoli National Dance Competition's Junior Division. I think she's ~16 in this clip. She went on to win gold at the Paris and Nagano Int'l Ballet Competitions and is now a principle at SFBallet. Music of Sainte-Saens - Danse Macabre.
Classical ribbon dance patterned after the flying goddesses of Dunhuang mural. This is the original Dunhuang dance, by the dancers who premiered it in the mid 1950s.

The first version to break out of the traditional peacock dance, which was a male dance. This features the gentleness of the peacocks as depicted by a group of female dancers. The lead is an ethnic Korean who was well known for her drum dance.
Peacock dance from the 4th Taoli National Dance Competition in 1994. Finalist. This is significantly different from Yang Liping's. The music sounds very scratchy but not much can be done about it.
She took Honorable Mention. The first prize went to the dancer for ??? (http://www.youtube. com/my_videos_edit?n s=1&video_id=yJscd45 Q1iQ).
This dance took top prize in the 1st CCTV National Dance Competition. I posted a version danced by a graduating class of Beijing Dance Academy. Same music, almost identical choreography, similar costume, different dancers.
Cheerful female solo from the 4th Taoli National Dance Competition.

The start portrays the birth of Nuozha; followed by the seaside frolic that disturbed the sea dragon god. Infuriated at the disruption, Nuozha fought the sea dragon and won.
A joyful fan dance from the 4th Taoli Cup National Dance Competition. The music used folk tunes from Shandong. The dance itself also incorporated many elements of ????.
Variations from Act 3's Pas de deux.
Junior division; 3rd Taoli Cup National Dance Competition. Excerpt from Sleeping Beauty. She looks about 10 here, not much artistry but so textbook that I just had to include it.
Oh and this portion of the competition required regular leotard, not full costumes.
